A specially commissioned piece for Bealtaine by the Hawk’s Well Theatre and Sligo Arts Service, ‘Songs from Home’ celebrates local traditional songs
Colm O’Donnell, from Kilmacteige, Co.Sligo is widely regarded as one of Ireland’s best traditional singers. As well as being gifted vocally, he is also an outstanding musician and his lilting is hard to beat! Colm engaged with a number of older Sligo community groups through song-based workshops and conversations. From the information gathered, this very special concert was developed for performance in May 2014 to celebrate the Bealtaine festival. Concerts were free and took place in Rathcormac Hall Drumcliffe, Nazareth House Care Village and the Hawk’s Well Theatre. Due to its popularity, 'Songs from Home' returned to the Hawk's Well for Fleadh Cheoil 2014 and also 2015.
'Songs from Home' was commissioned by the Hawk's Well Theatre and Sligo Arts Service for Bealtaine Festival Sligo 2014, with funding from Sligo Borough Council, Sligo County Council, HSE West and the Arts Council of Ireland.
'The effortless ease with which Colm sings belies a deep and complex awareness of his art… Songs that you heard before suddenly taken on a meaning you never knew they had' - The Sligo Champion
