Shine
A Drama Participation Programme with Young Adults with Intellectual Disabilities.

Shine has been running since January 2023. The Hawk’s Well Theatre started the programme of weekly immersive drama workshops for a group of young people with intellectual disabilities. This project aims to achieve greater equality of accessibility by supporting people with intellectual disabilities to access theatre as participants.
Engagement with community groups and support services shaped the programme and Hawk’s Well Theatre partnered with Sligo-Leitrim Community Inclusion Training Services, National Learning Network, This Ability and Down Syndrome Sligo to get the programme up and running, providing a series of immersive drama workshops for young adults with intellectual disabilities, along with training for local artists to work in this area.
A drama workshop for young people with intellectual disabilities in the Sligo area took place at the Hawk’s Well in April of last year and was facilitated by artists from Kildare based ‘Run of the Mill’ ahead of their show ‘Making a Mark’ at the theatre. Run of the Mill are an award-winning inclusive arts organisation committed to supporting people with intellectual disabilities to access high-quality experiences in the arts as artists, makers and participants.
This series of workshops is part-funded by the Irish Human Rights and Equality (IHREC) Grant Scheme as part of the Commission’s statutory power to provide grants to promote human rights and equality under the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission Act 2014. IHREC also funded training at the theatre in 2022 and 2024 for local artists to work in this area.
A big thank you to our funders MSLETB.
