Chanter and Strings was a musical event produced by the Hawk's Well Theatre in 2016 to celebrate the union of musical genres.
Featuring the best of traditional Irish & orchestral music, this was a rare opportunity to experience new and old traditional music with a full complement of orchestral instrumentation. Musicians Leonard Barry, Niamh Crowley and the Sligo Academy of Music Orchestra were joined by guests Seamie O’Dowd and Shane McGowan. The final performance was a synthesis of old and new and included much-loved piping classics such as The Foxchase alongside new music composed by Neil Martin and featured new arrangements alongside previously orchestrated repertoire from Shaun Davey & Rod McVeigh.
Master uilleann piper, Leonard Barry, widely acknowledged as one of Ireland's leading pipers was joined by Seamie O’Dowd & Shane McGowan - both widely regarded as two of the most accomplished guitar players in the Irish tradition. Students alongside masters, this very special event also featured the premiere of a new work for classical and traditional ensemble commissioned by the theatre from the renowned composer, Neil Martin.
