Join us as we celebrate Bloomsday this week with some hilarious performances from the works of the great James Joyce. Enjoy a selection of readings and songs from Donal O’Kelly and Sorcha Fox.
Donal O’Kelly and Sorcha Fox renew their longtime theatrical collaboration to look at Ireland in the year 1904 when Ulysses took place in Joyce’s imagination on 16th June. With extracts from Joyce’s work and original material from both Sorcha and Donal, relating Ulysses to today.
Donal O’Kelly has been a playwright and actor for four decades, touring his solo shows such as Catalpa, Bat The Father Rabbit The Son, Fionnuala, Joyced! and Hairy Jaysus. Other plays include The Cambria, Little Thing Big Thing, Asylum!Asylum! Francisco, Vive La and The Dogs. In 2021 he won The Dock Writing Time Award. He is writing a book on the origins of the Direct Provision system of accommodation for people in need of international refuge.
Sorcha Fox is based in North Leitrim. She has worked for 30 years in theatre as an actor, writer, director and facilitator. She was co-director of Benbo Productions with Donal O'Kelly. She directed The Bed for Cairde Arts Festival with artists Charmaine Matonsi, Amir Abualrob, Wasekere-Sekerani, Abigail (Ashley) Ramaabya, Grace Moyo and Nokwanda Siziba, Rafeef Ziadah and Donal O'Kelly. In 2017 she completed a course in Theatre and Cultural Resistance at the Freedom Theatre, Jenin Refugee Camp, Palestine. She works regularly with artist Amir Abualrob as a collaborator on The One of Many project and directed The Road for Amir's Time at the Well in Hawkswell Sligo. She is currently developing a new piece called Khallass/Enough with Amir. She completed a residency at The Hawkswell with Palestinian poet Rafeef Ziadah resulting in a collaborative spoken word performance of new work for Culture Night entitled Medusa. She has twice been awarded an Arts Council bursary for her performance poetry.
