Mikel Murfi Trilogy at Hawk's Well
Mikel Murfi's masterpiece trilogy chronicling his beloved Sligo through the wanderings of small town cobbler Pat Farnon comes to the Hawk's Well Theatre.
On Monday, September 23, the trilogy kicks off with THE MAN IN THE WOMAN'S SHOES. Set in October 1978 - Pope John Paul the First is not long dead, autumn is closing in and Pat Farnon has ‘some business’ to do in town. The Man In The Woman’s Shoes follows Pat Farnon as he walks to town and back again. It is a beautifully observed piece, utterly simple and widely praised. The show is funny, tender and at times downright daft.
Following the success of The Man In The Woman’s Shoes, Mikel Murfi returns on Wednesday 25 September with the companion piece I HEAR YOU AND REJOICE. Late in his life, Pat Farnon, a cobbler and all-round contented man, embarks on a journey he had not quite planned and finds that every twist in the road can bring its own surprises. Written and performed by Mikel Murfi, this show is the second collaboration between Hawk’s Well Theatre, Sligo County Council Arts Service and Mikel Murfi. It was created for the Bealtaine Festival - Celebrating Creativity As We Age.
On Thursday 26 September, the third in the series, THE MYSTERIOUS CASE OF KITSY RAINEY, finishes out Pat Farnon’s journey in a most unexpected way. Having married Kitsy Rainey late in life, cobbler, Pat Farnon finally decides to lift the lid on a life previously lived by his wife. And all the while Pat faces down his own reckoning. Tender, heartfelt and joyously funny.
The Mysterious Case of Kitsy Rainey is a third collaboration between Sligo County Council Arts Service, Hawk's Well Theatre Sligo, and Mikel Murfi. Additional support for The Mysterious Case of Kitsy Rainey was provided by Irish Arts Center, New York.
One-man show The Man in the Woman's Shoes, and its companion piece I Hear You and Rejoice were commissioned by Hawk’s Well Theatre and Sligo Arts Service for Bealtaine 2012. Written by and starring Mikel Murfi, the former, described as “a love letter to Sligo” has toured extensively. Hailed as “a miniature masterpiece” by the Times of London, and praised for its “astonishing acting” by the New York Times, the show has touched hearts and entertained audiences all over the world, picking up numerous awards along the way.
I Hear You and Rejoice meanwhile, is an account of one of the most unlikely marriages of all time, centring on “the ups, the downs and the beyond the beyonds.” The play was given a glowing five star review by the London Evening Standard who called it; “pure distilled 100 per cent theatrical magic”.
In 2024, following on from The Man in the Woman’s Shoes, and I Hear You and Rejoice, the third in the series, The Mysterious Case of Kitsy Rainey, finishes out Pat Farnon’s journey in a most unexpected way. Having married Kitsy Rainey late in life, cobbler, Pat Farnon finally decides to lift the lid on a life previously lived by his wife. And all the while Pat faces down his own reckoning. Tender, heartfelt and joyously funny.
