Culture Night at Hawk’s Well Theatre

Culture Night at Hawk’s Well Theatre
22 August, 2019

Culture Night will take place this year on Friday, September 20th. A nationwide day of free cultural events for the family, Culture Night been steadily gathering momentum, and now is a firm fixture on our cultural calender. Events are taking place all over Sligo and the Hawk's Well Theatre will be hosting an array of events for all ages, from babies to infinity and beyond!

Our first event is A Box running at the theatre at 4pm and 6pm. This playful children’s dance/theatre performance was created by Zoe Ramsey and Tonya Sheina of Echo Echo Ensemble. A Box is suitable for a very young audience aged 2 years and up, and is also suitable for grown-ups to help remind them of the importance of fantasy and playing games!

Next up at 5pm is Trad after Work - a rousing traditional music performance from some of Sligo’s finest young musicians. Celebrating traditional music in our local area, we welcome a selection of local young musicians who are involved in the Creative Counties stream of our Markievicz project to perform for you this Culture Night. Exhibiting musical maturity and prowess beyond their years, we strongly recommend not missing the opportunity to witness these wonderful musicians’ skills first hand.

Comhrá - Irish Conversation sessions will take place in the Hawk's Well Theatre, welcoming beginner and intermediate Irish speakers. Are you bi-lingual and fancy learning a few words of a third language – Irish? Culturally Curious session will take place at 6pm and it's suitable for beginners who have moved to Ireland. Talking Teic at 7pm is for more intermediate and fluent speakers who'd like to spice up their cúpla focal with modern Irish vocabulary.

Join us for an inspiring evening of words and music featuring some of poetry’s top voices for change, with Rafeef Ziadah and Sorcha Fox at 8pm. Rafeef will perform 'Sendiana'; a deeply moving, powerful, personal remembrance and challenge to occupation, exile and terror and what that does to an individual. It is also a beautiful testament to love and the human spirit and to Palestine. Sorcha will perform pieces from 'Remember' and both Rafeef and Sorcha will also perform new work on Culture Night, written during their Hawk’s Well residency together. Both pieces will be underscored with live original music from Dee Armstrong and Lughaidh Armstrong Mayock.

All Culture Night events are free to attend.

Culture Night Sligo is brought to you by the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and the Creative Ireland programme in partnership with Sligo County Council Arts Service.
