Watch Cyprus Avenue for World Theatre Day 2020


To celebrate World Theatre Day On 27 March 2020, at noon we are partnering with the Royal Court Theatre,The Space and The Abbey Theatre to host Cyprus Avenue by David Ireland for free via our Facebook page. David Ireland’s Cyprus Avenue is a multi-award-winning play and production starring Stephen Rea and directed by Vicky Featherstone. It premiered in the Abbey Theatre in 2016 in a co-production between the Royal Court Theatre and the Abbey Theatre, the critically acclaimed production has also been performed in London, Belfast, and New York. The filmed adaptation mixes live capture of the performance from the stage of the Royal Court with location shooting in Belfast.

Eric Miller (Stephen Rea) is a Belfast Loyalist. He is experiencing a psychotic episode and mistakes his five-week old granddaughter for Gerry Adams. Generations of sectarian trauma convince him that his cultural heritage is under siege. He must act.

David Ireland’s hard hitting black comedy Cyprus Avenue tells the story of a man struggling with the past and terrified of the future. It was awarded Best New Play at the Irish Times Theatre Awards, the James Tait Black Prize for Drama., and Best Actor for Stephen Rea at the Irish Times Theatre Awards.

Directed by Vicky Featherstone, the play was originally produced by the Royal Court Theatre, London and Abbey Theatre, Dublin before touring to Belfast and the Public Theater in New York.

The film adaptation mixes live capture of performance from the iconic Royal Court Theatre stage production with location shooting in Belfast. It  was commissioned by The Space and produced for BBC Four by the Royal Court Theatre.
