Rafeef Ziadah and Sorcha FoxCulture Night
Join us for an inspiring evening of words and music featuring some of poetry’s top voices for change, with Rafeef Ziadah, and Sorcha Fox. These two exciting artists are undertaking a week’s residency at the Hawk’s Well in September which will culminate in this very special performance on Culture Night.
Rafeef will perform 'Sendiana' a sequence of linked poems with live original music written first for PalFest: Arts Festival Supporting Palestine in Liberty Hall in 2017. It is a deeply moving, powerful, personal remembrance and challenge to occupation, exile and terror and what that does to an individual. It is also a beautiful testament to love and the human spirit and to Palestine.
Sorcha will perform pieces from “Remember” and both Rafeef and Sorcha will also perform new work on Culture Night, written during their Hawk’s Well residency together. Both pieces will be underscored with live original music from Dee Armstrong and Lughaidh Armstrong Mayock.
Sorcha Fox is an award winning performer and writer. Her most recent plays are 'Trust' written for D15 Youth in Draíocht Blanchardstown and '2 Squirrels' written for Home Theatre Ireland as part of the Dublin Theatre Festival in 2018. 'Remember' is poetry in performance, winner of the UNESCO New Work Award and first performed in Liberty Hall for Lingo: A Spoken Word Festival in 2016, it is a linked sequence of pieces with original live music. It is a powerful, funny and moving invocation to remember the best and the worst in us in order to be able to imagine something new.
Rafeef Ziadah is a Palestinian spoken word artist and human rights activist. Her performances of poems like ‘We Teach Life, Sir’ and ‘Shades of Anger’ went viral online within days of their release and have been viewed over a million times. Rafeef’s poems continue to be a rally cry for action against injustice and a potent rendition of the everyday lives of ordinary people in the Middle East. We Teach Life, her second album, is a powerful collection of spoken word with original music compositions.
