Gazelle by Sinéad Sexton
Presented by Hawk's Well Theatre & Cairde Sligo Arts Festival
Hawk’s Well Theatre proudly presented an illuminating one-woman-show about the legacy of Eva Gore-Booth, as part of the Cairde Sligo Arts Festival on Thurs 6 July and Fri 7 July 2023.
Written and performed by Sinead Sexton, directed by Hawk’s Well ‘Artist-in-Residence’ Miriam Needham, and designed by Sinéad O’Donnell-Carey, Gazelle explores a day in the life of a tour guide who plays the role of Eva Gore-Booth.
Through the themes of place, feminism and queer identity, the audience journey with the tour guide through Eva’s family home. As her work persona begins to fracture, what starts as an average work day suddenly falls apart as identities become warped, crack and crumble.
A recipient of Hawk’s Well Theatre’s ‘Time at the Well’ Bursary, Sinead Sexton is a theatre practitioner and performance artist who is primarily interested in women’s stories. Gazelle explores Eva Gore-Booth’s legacy…
“It is just one story of one woman (Eva Gore-Booth) in Irish history whose story hasn't been told truthfully. Many women in our history are remembered through the eyes of men. My aim for Gazelle is to bring to light a more truthful expression of who Eva Gore-Booth was, beyond the silk kimono that Yeats enshrined her and her sister Constance within.”
