Start the Year Off With Our Online Courses
With many of us using the fresh beginning of a new year to usher in some positive changes, what better time than to dive into a new course or workshop? We may be in lockdown, but for those wanting to pick up a new skill or to brush up on some old ones, Hawk’s Well Theatre is pleased to launch a raft of online courses to suit all interests. Whether it’s writing, music, or a chance to tickle the funny bone, the theatre has something for all as 2021 kicks off.
Beginning on 25th January for all budding comedians and writers, Comedy Writing for Adults offers a chance to step out of your comfort zone and unlock your creativity with a fun comedy writing course for adults. Whatever your preferred comedy genre may be, Savage Eye contributor John Colleary will help to develop your unique writing style, and also enable you to present your ideas in a short stand-up comedy set. Offering a much needed opportunity to laugh about lockdown, this course will be delivered online over zoom.
On the same day, John Joe Kelly’s ever-popular Bodhrán Workshops return. Renowned worldwide for his energetic teaching methods, this is a great opportunity to enjoy a six-week course with the bodhrán master. The course welcomes both experienced players and beginners (in two separate sessions), and runs every Monday until 1st March, with experienced classes beginning at 6.30pm, while beginners follow at 8pm.
Write on with Brian Leyden follows from 26th January. Back by popular demand, the Irish novelist, short story writer, memoirist, playwright, screenwriter, librettist, and editor conducts a new six-week series of writing workshops. Packed with guidance, perceptive insights and practical knowhow on the writer’s craft and progressing your work, this course will also be delivered over zoom.
Back to music, and Traditional Music Classes with Oisín MacDiarmada also runs from 26 January. Traditional musicians of all ages interested in improving their technique and expanding their repertoire can avail. With two sessions, the 6.30pm workshop is open to all instrument players who frequent sessions often, while the 8pm course is aimed at musicians who consider themselves learners.
One of our more recent additions to our learning programme, Guitar with Shane McGowan gets picking from 27th Jan. With two workshops to choose from; Traditional Guitar from 6.30pm, and Guitar Styles from 8pm, there’s something for every strummer. In the former, the Lúnasa and Dolores Keane collaborator will explore many different techniques and approaches to accompanying and playing Irish traditional music on the guitar. The latter meanwhile, will explore many different guitar playing styles including rock, acoustic, Irish, jazz, bluegrass and ragtime, and focus on technique.
Finally, Cathy Jordan will delve into Traditional Song, also from 27th January. The Dervish singer will deliver two virtual singing workshops; Songs Everyone Should Know, from 6.30pm; and Songs That Will Wow from 8pm. The 6.30pm session is aimed at people of all skill levels and explores songs that everyone should have in their repertoire, while the latter will appeal to those who like to take a solo from time to time; expanding repertoire and delving into more advanced skill progression.
