Hawk’s Well win Digital Media Award with Virtual Trad Orchestra

The Hawk’s Well Theatre won the the Best Public Life Award at the Accenture Digital Media Awards 2016 for its  Virtual Trad Orchestra –an innovative Irish Traditional Musical project which brought together musicians from all over the world, digitally, to perform the ballad ‘The Salley Gardens’ in a ground breaking initiative as part of the theatre’s Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann celebrations. The award was presented to Deirdre Melvin-Walsh, Project Manager at the Hawk's Well and Mike Guckian of Sligeach Films at the award ceremony in Dublin on Friday 19th of February.

Now in its twelfth year the Accenture Digital Media Awards are the most prestigious Digital Awards in Ireland. They recognise creativity and innovation across multiple areas of an ever evolving sector which includes digital content creation, advertising and marketing, mobile media, app development, social networking, web design and development. The theatre was in the finalists of the Best Public Life category for government, charity and non-profit.The Virtual Trad Orchestra was an ambitious multi-media project which demonstrates the worldwide popularity of Irish traditional music. Open to one and all, musicians and singers worldwide were invited to join in this ground-breaking project and perform the quintessential Sligo anthem ‘Down by the Salley Gardens’.Participants uploaded their musical contribution to the internet and the Hawk’s Well curated all the submissions into one spectacular collaborative performance.  In this live musical extravaganza the world’s finest traditional musicians were joined digitally by musicians from all over the world, accompanied by stunning visual projections.
Musicians who became part of the orchestra include Sean Og  O Graham, Niamh Dunne, Tim O'Brien, Tola Custy, Fraser Fifield, Charlie McKerron, Jean-Michel Veillon, Patsy Reid, Kevin Crawford, Maura O’Connell, Joanie Madden, Ed Boyd, Oisín Mac Diarmada, Liam Kelly, Cillian Vallely, Alan Kelly, Jos Kelly, Rick Epping, Anna Houston, Karol Lynch, Kieran Quinn and many, many more. The Virtual Trad Orchestra premiered on the 16th of August at Fleadh Cheoil 2015 when international singing sensation Maura O’Connell along with Seamus Begley, Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh Pauline Scanlon and Gerry O’Beirne performed the Sligo anthem ‘Down by the Salley Gardens’ live on the Hawk’s Well stage accompanied by the Virtual Trad Orchestra on Sunday 16th of August.

Audiences were treated to the world’s finest traditional musicians accompanied by stunning visual projections showcasing the musicians from near and far.  Now you can relive the moving performance in a video which also features a behind the scenes look at the orchestra with contributions from participants.
