Festival Season at Hawk’s Well Theatre
As part of the Cairde Arts Festival, there are a number of great family-friendly events, starting with Hands Across the World - a social celebration of food and culture, taking place at Osta café on Monday the 9th and Tuesday the 10th of July. A Pop-Up Family Sing takes place at the theatre on Wednesday the 11th of July, from 6 - 7pm, where choirmaster Dave Flynn, (who has appeared on RTE’s Choir of Ages), will lead this fun workshop where all members of the family are welcome. Masters of ragtime, Dixieland blues and early swing, The California Feetwarmers take to the stage on Wednesday the 11th of July and Headstuff Lectures - a fun night of 'Lectures' by wonderful speakers talking passionately about different topics - comes to the theatre on Thursday the 12th. The final Cairdre event at the theatre will be trad and folk giants, FLOOK who take to the stage on Friday the 13th of July.
As part of the Tread Softly Festival, The 59th International Summer School Opening takes place at the theatre on Thursday the 19th of July at 6pm. Led by co-directors Professor Matthew Campbell and Dr Lauren Arrington, the ten-day school includes lectures, music, drama, poetry and tours and walks in the wonderful Sligo landscape. Also performing at the Hawk's Well during the Tread Softly festival are JPTrio performing a lunchtime gig on Thursday 19 July at 1.10pm and Johnny Duhan on 20 July at 8pm. This year's Sligo Jazz Project kicks off on Tuesday the 24th of July with Liane Carroll and Friends, featuring Shannon Barnett on trombone, the voices of Liane Carroll, Sara Colman and Emilia Martensson, Meilana Gillard on saxophone and other guests. On Wednesday the 25th of July, Joe Dart: Bass Superstar Masterclass takes place at the theatre. Viulfpeck’s international bass sensation Joe Dart will give a rare masterclass prior to his appearance in the theatre later on the same night when there will be a double bill: The Olllam + Two Bass Hit. Another big night will be on Thursday the 26th of July when SJP Big Band: Nightfly & Other Stories comes to the stage. Here, the SJP Big Band, with guests including Malcolm Edmonstone, Liane Carroll, Ryan Quigley and Mike Walker will perform the music of Donald Fagen, Mike Walker and others. Featuring words by James Joyce and music by Brian Byrne, Brian Byrne: Goldenhair takes place on Friday, July 27th. Sligo Jazz Project 2018 comes to a close on Saturday, July 28th with the SJP All Stars finale. Always a big night, this event features no less than twenty-six amazing musicians from ten countries including Liane Carroll, Malcolm Edmonstone, Federico Malaman, Neal Wilkinson, Paul Booth, Henrik Linder, Brian Byrne and many more.
