Chanter and Strings

Chanter and Strings
4 November, 2016

Featuring the best of traditional Irish & orchestral music, this is a rare opportunity to experience new & old traditional music with a full complement of orchestral instrumentation. The stellar line up includes Leonard Barry, Niamh Crowley and the Sligo Academy of Music Orchestra with guests Seamie O’Dowd & Shane McGowan.

Master uilleann piper, Leonard Barry, is widely acknowledged one of Ireland's leading pipers. Whether playing with his band The New Road or as a solo piper, Leonard is recognised as a true master of his craft. A Kerry native, he lived in Dublin for many years before moving to Sligo. Joining him are Seamie O’Dowd & Shane McGowan, widely regarded as two of the most accomplished guitar players in the Irish tradition. Students alongside masters, this very special event also features the premiere of a new work for classical and traditional ensemble commissioned by the Hawk’s Well Theatre from the renowned composer, Neil Martin. A celebrated cellist & uilleann piper, Martin is a prolific composer & arranger for concert hall, stage & film. He is also a member of the West Ocean String Quartet (WOSQ).

The final performance will be a synthesis of old & new & will include much loved piping classics such as The Foxchase alongside new music composed by Neil Martin. It will feature new arrangements alongside previously orchestrated repertoire from Shaun Davey & Rod McVeigh.

A one off event, this promises to be a night to remember!
