An extraordinary talent, this Sligo multi-instrumentalist holds a very dear place in the hearts of so many. He was joined by musical friends from far and near to celebrate his enormous contribution to music in this very special concert.
In this special tribute to a local hero, Eddie Lee was joined onstage by a huge line-up of fellow musicians including No Crows, Those Nervous Animals, Anything Goes, Joe Hunt, David Lyttle/Brian Priestley, Mike Nielsen/Ciaran Wilde & Cahal Roche, Oleg Ponomarev & Fintan Gilligan, Rumbatism, Niamh Crowley, Austin McManus, Kieran Quinn, Owen Troy & Seamie McGowan, Simon Hunt and Sinead Conway. This celebration night was hughly enjoyable and paid a wonderful tribute to the contribution made by Eddie to Sligo's music scene.
Eddie has been at the forefront of music education in Sligo for the past ten years, both as director of Sligo Jazz Project and Sligo School of Rock/Sligo Contemporary Music School. He has achieved the highest Rockschool Grades in bass performance and studied jazz with Mike Nielsen in Chatham Row (now DIT) Dublin. In 2006 he was awarded an Arts Council Bursary to study jazz at the renowned Global Music Foundation’s Tuscany Summer School and Jazz Seminar in Certaldo, Italy. Through his work with Sligo Jazz Project, he has also studied with international jazz bassists and educators John Goldsby, Michael Manring, Rufus Reid and Eric Revis (USA) as well as Arnie Somogyi (UK) and Philip Donkin (UK). Eddie is director and administrator of Sligo Jazz Project, which has hosted annually since 2006, the biggest jazz education event ever held in Ireland, Sligo International Summer School and Jazz Festival. An experienced performer, he is a member of Sligo-based groups NoCrows, Anything Goes and The Odd Couple. Eddie has performed and/or recorded with many well known Irish and international artists including Brian Kennedy, Kieran Goss, Frances Black, Café Orchestra, Louis Stewart, The Pale, Mike Nielsen, Richie Buckley, Sandro Gibellini, Cleveland Watkiss, David Lyttle, Soweto Kinch, Andreas Varady, Linley Hamilton, Katell Keineg, Nine Wassies from Bainne, Stocktons Wing, Those Nervous Animals and many more.Eddie has also performed as Orchestra bassist in musical theatre shows such as West Side Story, Hairspray, Guys and Dolls, Bugsy Malone, Hot Mikado, Godspell and Honk.
In the past three decades, Eddie has recorded and/or performed with Enya, Bill Whelan, Donal Lunny, Juliet Turner, Gary O’ Brian, Colm O’Donnell, Seamie O’ Dowd, Those Nervous Animals, Auto da Fé, Stockton’s Wing, Katell Keineg, Nine Wassies from Bainne, The Pale, Maura O’ Connell, Speranza, Dolores Keane, Kieran Goss, John Faulkner, Frances Black, Speranza, Brian Kennedy, Dervish and the Café Orchestra. An electric bassist since the age of seventeen, Eddie studied double bass during mid 1990’s. He studied jazz theory with Mike Nielsen in Dublin and since then has grown in status on the upright, playing with many of Ireland’s leading jazz musicians such as Mike Nielsen, Louis Stewart, Richie Buckley, Michael Buckley, Gay McIntyre, Phil Ware and David Lyttle and guesting with eminent European jazz artists Sandro Gibellini and Bjorn Solli.
