Great Success for Sligo Sings
From September, the Hawk’s Well Theatre has been developing and nurturing six new choirs in Sligo, created from the busiest workplaces in our community. Dave Flynn, Niamh Crowley, Eunjoo Goh, Sinéad Conway, Aileen Concannon and Leonard Dorrian were appointed as Sligo Sings choirmasters and began working with choirs from Sligo IT, The Department of Social Protection, Sligo Regional Hospital, Sligo Volunteer Centre, Sligo County Council along with The Markievicz Minstrels. Each choir worked through seven weekly rehearsals with their choirmaster within their workplace. They were encouraged to keep singing between rehearsals, to sing together, sing at their desks, sing in the shower, just keep singing! Along the way, the choir members had an opportunity to meet new colleagues, create new relationships, gain a new sense of wellbeing, relieve stress and have lots of fun! The Hawk's Well are delighted with the progress each choir made in such a short period of time and we hope that they continue to grow as choirs and continue to explore the joys of singing together.
On Sunday, 29th of November, all choirs came together to celebrate their achievement with family and friends at the Sligo Sings evening in the Hawk’s Well theatre. On the evening, each choir performed two individual songs and then all six choirs, comprising over two hundred singers, joined together for the finale song as one major Sligo Sings choir.
'My own experience of taking part in the choir is the fun we are having and how relaxed everyone is. Niamh is such a professional but relaxed and great fun. It's great getting to know everyone from all walks of life and to know we are doing something worthwhile for the community' - Marie Cawley, Sligo Volunteers Centre choir
'We are all enjoying the experience, all very energised and in better form generally. The tutors are great and have a fab way of working with the group, fun and supportive and getting a result…….only for the Hawk’s Well we would never have got to know this wonderful bunch of singers!!' - Assumpta Kelly, Department of Social Protection Choir
'The opportunity to take part in Sligo Sings came along, and it has been wonderful........ a forum to meet some fantastic people. Thanks to everyone involved' - Heidi Stemp, Sligo Volunteers Centre Choir
