Sligo Children’s Book Festival enjoyed by lots of little ones!
Sligo Children's Book Festival took place from Thursday the 2nd to Sunday the 5th of March, with lots of book-related fun activities for children to enjoy. Events took place at the Hawk’s Well Theatre and The Model, kicking off with a Dr. Suess’ 113th Birthday Party at The Model which was opened by Sligo mayor, Marie Casserly.
There were two days of book making sessions with Kids Own Book Factory, led by artist Naomi Draper and writer Jo Holmwood. Coiscéim presented the stunning The Wolf and Peter at the Hawk’s Well. Filled with dance and live music, this fun and richly theatrical production took children and their families on a thrilling adventure to explore and discover contemporary dance and performance at its best.
On Saturday, The Ark presented RIDICULOUS! - bringing the audience on a journey through crazy poems, silly songs and nonsense verse from some of the best loved children’s’ poets including Roald Dahl, Lewis Carroll, Spike Milligan, Tom Lehrer, Marriott Edgar and Pat Ingoldsby.
The Secret of Kells inspired two workshops for kids at The Model - Puppetry for Kids and Stop Motion for Kids. The Speks returned to the Hawk’s Well with a lively show of nursery rhymes and sing-along songs set to acoustic Irish music. The Speks have won a Parents’ Choice music award in the US where their music has been described as ‘Riverdance for kids’ and they encouraged everyone to sing, scream, clap and dance along during their performances!
On Sunday the Hawk’s Well Theatre presented the first of their Books & Hot Chocolate Club get-togethers for young readers, featuring lots of brilliant books and fantastical characters as well as entertaining fun-filled storytelling sessions, topped off with a scrumptious hot chocolate!
