Mad Hatter Children’s Theatre Festival 2016
This year’s Mad Hatter Festival has a wonderful programme of fun, family-friendly theatre suitable for children of all ages. The very first festival of children's theatre in Sligo, this festival is the result of a collaboration between the Hawk's Well Theatre and Blue Raincoat Theatre Company. The festival aims to provide Sligo audiences with a diverse range of high quality artistic productions from home and abroad and to entertain, teach and inspire the next generation. The festival takes place during midterm, with events taking place in the Hawk’s Well Theatre and the Factory Performance Space.
Throughout the festival, Alice in Wonderland will be performed by Blue Raincoat Theatre Company at 8pm from Wednesday the 26th of October until Saturday the 6th November in The Factory Performance Space (there are no performances on Sundays or Mondays). Suitable for all aged 10 and upwards, this is the company’s final show of their 25th anniversary year. Lewis Carroll's timeless classic childhood fantasy tells the story of Alice as she ventures into the world of her imagination and encounters characters such as the Mad Hatter and White Rabbit. Definitely a show not to miss!
Fidget Feet present Cinder and the Ellas at the Hawk’s Well Theatre on Wednesday 2nd of November, with two shows ; 2pm & 6pm. Suitable for children from 8-12 years old, Cinderella takes flight in this classic fairy tale, full of amazing aerial circus acts. From the company that brought you catch me and Elves and Shoemaker, Cinder and the Ellas is a show is full of Fidget Feet’s humour featuring a stunning mix of aerial feats mixed with dance, theatre, comedy and video art. A pint sized Cirque Du Soleil, Fidget Feet is an internationally renowned company that is one of Ireland’s own.
On Thursday, 3rd of November, at 2pm & 6pm, Monkeyshine Theatre bring their show Voyage to the Hawk’s Well. Inspired by Jonathan Swift’s fantastic tales of Gulliver’s Travels, Voyage is an electrifying, big hearted epic for everyone over eight years of age. With their unique style and signature charm, Monkeyshine create an astonishing world where nothing is quite what it seems!
Banyan Theatre bring their production, Gruff on Saturday the 5th of November at 2pm. This much loved fairy-tale is brought to life with a pinch of Banyan magic and features puppetry, storytelling and original music. On Sunday, 6th of November, the Hawk’s Well Theatre Family Proms presents The Song Symphony aimed at introducing smallies aged 0 - 5yrs and their families to the delights of music in this very special family proms event. Featuring lullabies old and new performed by a host of fantastic musicians led by Kieran Quinn, this event will also feature a new suite of music for little ones composed by Seamie O’Dowd and arranged by Jessie Whitehead.
A series of theatrical workshops takes place at the Hawk’s Well as part of the festival. On Thursday, 3rd of November, there are two special Halloween-themed Brick Flicks (Lego stopmotion) workshops; 11am-1.30pm for beginners, and 2.30-5pm for a more advanced level. As always these workshops are focused on a combination of simple demonstration with plenty of hands-on learning, with resulting movies shared through Dropbox and Youtube! There will be two Magic Workshops on Saturday the 5th with Nemo the magician. The afternoon workshop from 2.30-4.30pm is sold out, but a second workshop has now been added to the programme, running from 11 - 1pm. Go along and learn some amazing magic tricks to wow your friends and family in a fun and supportive atmosphere. Suitable for ages 10 and upwards, children will discover completely new and secret uses for daily objects such as a deck of cards, dice, dominoes, banknotes, paper clips, rubber bands, A4 sheets, calculators, shoe laces... the only limit is their imagination! There are two Minecraft workshops on Friday the 4th of November and both were quickly sold out. Exploring engineering and design concepts using Minecraft, attendants will design their own theatre, working together learning key subjects such as engineering and design while using their own creativity.
