Eliza Carthy & Tim Eriksen
Two phenomenal voices from either side of the Atlantic singing songs from each of their traditions with a rare, raw passion and tangible energy. They tour in support of new live album, Bottle. Eliza Carthy and Tim Eriksen are two of the most respected voices in traditional folksong. Together they form a powerhouse duo that is, in turns, hilarious and heartbreaking, intense and joyful.
Bottle has a totally unique sound! It’s a mix of ‘hardcore Americana’ and ‘hardcore Anglicana’ – traditional material from both sides of the pond, featuring fiddle, electric guitar, banjo, bass drum and both Eliza and Tim’s compelling vocals. The material was recorded live and then treated in an exciting way, adding texture and sounds as the performers continued to weave their story in the studio.
Eliza Carthy is one of the most engaging performers of her generation. Twice nominated for the Mercury Prize and winner of innumerable other accolades over a 21 year career, Eliza has performed and recorded with a diverse array of artists including, Paul Weller, Richard Hawley, John Smith and Van Dyke Parks, Patrick Wolf and Peggy Seeger. More than most, Eliza Carthy has revitalised folk music and captured the most hardened of dissenters with intelligent, charismatic and boundary-crossing performance. This year Eliza was honoured with a MBE for her amazing services to folk music.
Tim Eriksen is acclaimed for transforming American tradition with his startling interpretations of old ballads, love songs, shape-note gospel and dance tunes from New England and Southern Appalachia. He combines hair-raising vocals with inventive accompaniment on banjo, fiddle, guitar and banjo sexto - a twelve string Mexican acoustic bass - creating a distinctive hardcore Americana sound that ranges from the bare bones of solo unaccompanied singing to the lush, multi-layered arrangements on Josh Billing’s Voyage, his new album of northern roots American music.
